Introduction & Purpose
Jordan Rail Pty Ltd recognises that the earth's environment is under severe stress from uncontrolled human activity, threatening the survival of our society. The Sustainability & Innovation Management System (SIMS) establishes the framework by which Jordan Rail integrates sustainable development into all operational activities — in its own practice, as a participant in a community of practice, and as a participant in the Australian social discourse.
This system operates in conjunction with the Environmental Management System (EMS, JRSE-110) and the Environmental Sustainability Policy (JRP-07310, authorised by Tomas Jordan, 12/08/2025). Together these documents form Jordan Rail's end-to-end sustainability governance framework — from high-level policy commitment through to on-the-ground operational controls and monthly performance reporting.
Jordan Rail's sustainability strategy covers three interconnected impact domains: Environmental, Economic, and Social. Documented targets, timelines, and internal communications are maintained within this system, and progress is evidenced through key metrics, third-party audits, internal reviews, and periodic sustainability reporting to project principals and stakeholders.
Sustainability Policy Statement
Jordan Rail commits itself to minimising its impact on the environment and maximising the effective use of resources across all levels of operations. We strive to achieve this by increasing communication and awareness of our efforts and fostering responsible environmental behaviour among staff, contractors, and users.
Jordan Rail is committed not only to complying with applicable legislation in all of its operations, but to minimising risks and impacts through the development of robust and documented systems to implement, measure, monitor, and disseminate excellent environmental performance — both within its operations and to the broader community.
- Providing a safe and healthful workplace for all workers.
- Maintaining an environmentally sustainable aware culture, where responsibility is assigned and understood at all levels.
- Being an environmentally responsible neighbour in our community.
- Conserving natural resources by reusing and recycling materials wherever practicable.
- Using processes in our own operations that do not adversely affect the environment.
- Ensuring the responsible use of energy throughout the organisation.
- Participating in efforts to improve environmental protection and understanding.
- Taking steps to improve environmental performance continually.
- Conducting rigorous audits, evaluations, and self-assessments of this policy's implementation.
- Working with suppliers who promote sound environmental practices.
- Enhancing awareness among employees, contractors, and users — educating and motivating them to act in an environmentally responsible manner.
Environmental Impacts & Controls
Jordan Rail's operations — including plant hire, rail maintenance, earthworks, and logistics — generate direct and indirect environmental impacts. The following areas are actively monitored, controlled, and reported in accordance with JRSE-110 and the Environmental Sustainability Policy (JRP-07310).
- Environmental Regulations & Compliance: Jordan Rail complies with all applicable Commonwealth and State/Territory environmental legislation, including the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act), the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act 2007 (NGER Act), the Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997 (NSW), and relevant EPA regulations. Site-specific environmental obligations are captured in the Environmental Management System and Sustainability Reporting templates.
- Carbon Footprint: Greenhouse gas emissions from diesel plant, vehicles, and site equipment are tracked monthly. Fuel consumption data is used to calculate CO₂-equivalent emissions in accordance with NGER methodology. Reduction targets are set annually and progress is reported to project principals.
- Fuel Types & Uses: Jordan Rail primarily uses diesel fuel in heavy plant, rail equipment, and fleet vehicles. Fuel consumption is recorded via the Refuelling Report module (Jordan Rail Operating System). Where alternative or lower-emission fuels become available and operationally viable, Jordan Rail will evaluate their adoption as part of ongoing innovation.
- Water Source & Uses: Water use associated with operations — including dust suppression, plant washing, and site activities — is monitored and minimised. Water sources are identified per site (mains, bore, reclaimed), and use is recorded in sustainability reporting.
- Waste Generation: Construction, maintenance, and workshop activities generate solid waste, liquid waste (oils, hydraulic fluids), and hazardous waste. Jordan Rail maintains waste manifests, engages licensed waste contractors, and targets progressive reduction of landfill waste through segregation and reuse programmes.
- Recycling & Resource Recovery: Jordan Rail actively segregates recyclable materials (metals, tyres, lubricant containers) and engages with accredited recyclers. Salvaged materials from decommissioned plant are prioritised for reuse before disposal. Recycling rates are captured in monthly sustainability reports.
Economic Impacts & Local Procurement
Jordan Rail is a locally owned and operated Australian business. Our procurement practices are designed to support the local economy and promote sustainable economic outcomes in the communities where we operate.
- Local Business: As a Victorian-based, family-owned business, Jordan Rail prioritises procurement from local suppliers, service contractors, and transport providers. This multiplier effect supports local jobs and keeps economic value within the regions we serve.
- Supplier Diversity: Jordan Rail actively seeks out and supports minority-owned, women-owned, and small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs) in its supplier base. This commitment promotes economic growth in underserved communities and reflects our social responsibility obligations.
- Local Products & Services: Where operationally practicable, Jordan Rail sources materials, parts, consumables, and professional services from Australian manufacturers and local providers, reducing supply-chain risk and transport emissions simultaneously.
- Procurement Transparency: All purchase orders are managed through the Jordan Rail Operating System (PO module), providing a documented and auditable record of procurement decisions. Sustainable procurement criteria — including supplier environmental and labour standards — are applied at the point of selection.
Targets, Timelines & Evidence
Jordan Rail maintains documented sustainability targets and tracks progress through the Jordan Rail Operating System. Evidence of performance is collected monthly and is available for project principal review, stakeholder reporting, and regulatory submission.
- Documented Targets & Timelines: Sustainability targets (fuel reduction, waste diversion, carbon tracking, supplier diversity) are recorded with assigned owners and target completion dates. Internal communications about these goals are distributed to all relevant staff.
- Plans & Records: Supporting records include project environmental management plans, procurement contracts, energy-efficiency project outlines, and sustainability checklists. These are stored in the Environmental Management System and Document Control Register.
- Key Metrics & Data: Progress is demonstrated through monthly data from key metrics — fuel bills and consumption logs, waste disposal receipts and manifests, water-use records, and carbon footprint calculations (NGER methodology). This data feeds the monthly Sustainability Report.
- Stakeholder Communication: Project principals and stakeholders are informed of sustainability initiatives through pre-project environmental briefings, site induction packs, sustainability reports, and periodic review meetings. Surveys and feedback reports may be requested by principals to evidence stakeholder awareness.
- Third-Party Audits & Certifications: Jordan Rail supports third-party environmental audits, internal review processes, and is aligned to ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management principles via the EMS (JRSE-110). Certifications, audit reports, and corrective action registers are maintained as evidence of continuous improvement.
- Case Studies & Sustainability Reports: Jordan Rail compiles sustainability case studies, project outcomes, and periodic sustainability reports that detail the results of environmental and social initiatives. These are available to project principals on request.
NGER & Monthly Sustainability Reporting
Certain projects require specific monthly reporting of fuel, waste, water, and material use in accordance with the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act 2007 (NGER Act) and project-specific sustainability reporting requirements. Jordan Rail has the systems, processes, and data-collection practices in place to meet these obligations.
Jordan Rail agrees to provide sustainability reporting as required by the project principal, including but not limited to: monthly fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emission data; waste generation, diversion, and disposal records; water use by source and activity; and material consumption summaries.
- NGER Act Compliance: Jordan Rail calculates and records greenhouse gas emissions from fuel combustion in accordance with the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting (Measurement) Determination. Facility-level data is maintained with sufficient granularity to support NGER reporting if triggered.
- Monthly Fuel Reporting: Diesel and fuel consumption is recorded via the Refuelling Report module, with yard dispenser exports imported and analysed through the Fuel Reporting module. Monthly totals by vehicle/plant unit are extracted and converted to CO₂-equivalent emissions using published NGER emission factors.
- Monthly Waste Reporting: Waste generation by category (general, hazardous, recyclable) is recorded from waste manifests and disposal receipts. Monthly diversion rates and disposal volumes are summarised in the Sustainability Report.
- Monthly Water Reporting: Water use is recorded by source (mains, bore, reclaimed) and activity (dust suppression, washing, site processes). Monthly consumption is summarised and compared against targets.
- Material Use Reporting: Significant material inputs (aggregates, concrete, steel, consumables) are tracked by project and reported monthly where required by the principal's sustainability framework.
- Reporting Commitment: Jordan Rail confirms it has previously been involved in projects requiring this level of sustainability reporting and agrees to provide complete, accurate, and timely reporting in the format required by the project principal.
